NEWS IN THE CITY. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 1. Dr McArthur, S.M., has been appointed chairman'of tlie North Island Railway Appeal Board, in succession to Mr H. Eyre Kenny, who lias retired on superannuation. Tho price of milk lias been raised a penny a quart, making the price fourpence. H.M.S. Challenger arrived from Sydney to-day with two cases of scarlatina on board. Tlie patients fire bluejackets, and have been removed to the hospital. Two short, sharp shocks .of earthquake .were felt here at 3.10 this morning. The premonitory symptoms alarmed many persons. Norton, an action for £2OOO damages for alleged libel. . _ , ~ Andrew Godbaz, who was tried berove Mr Justice Chapman at Palmerston North in February last, on a charge or assaulting Edward Arthur Colley, so , as to cause him grievous bodily harm, came no for sentence to-day. llie jury found him guilty of common assault, and tlie judge reserved for the Appeal Court the question as to whether the finding amounted to a verdict of guilty. Godbaz to-day was sentenced to thine months, to date front the date of the To-dav Mr Justice Cooper adjudged \V. G. Somerville, solicitor, bankrupt on bis creditors’ petition.
