EDUCATION AND DEFENCE.
"We demand imperatively of every parent that his children shall be educated, and we provide the necessary facilities at great and increasing expense. Is it unreasonable or oppressive to further demand that before he reaches manhood every lad shall submit to such training as -will enable him to take effective part in- the- national defence should occasion arise ? Our entire educational system is compulsory, nor should we introduce any new principle if we extended it to cover defensive training.—-“ Auckland Herald.”
