MONDAY, MAY 3. (Before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. William Christie, charged with drunkenness, pleaded guilty, and was fined 10s with costs 2s, in default 4S hours imprisonment. THE FACTORIES ACT. The Inspector of Factories .(Mr M. Carmody) .proceeded against Cutfibert Morse on three charges of contravening the Factories Act bv employing an assistant longer than the number of hours provided. Mr Burnard- appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. Mr. Burnard said the man was only employed the number of hours that had been the custom in Gisborne for some years past. The man had been discharged and the present information was the result. / The Inspector of Factories said he had drawn the defendant’s attention to the hours mentioned in the Factories Act some months ago, and Mr Morse knew perfectly well what he was doino\ Mr Morse had promised to regulate tho hours of the workmen so as to comply with the Act. The Bench said tho maximum penalty on each charge was £lO, but a fine of £1 would be inflicted on one charge and a fine of Is on each of the other cases, costs to be allowed in one case only. Tho Inspector of Factories also proceeded against E. G. A. Reynolds for not closing his shop at 9 o’c.ock on the evening of Saturday 1/th April. Mr Stock appeared for the defendant who pleaded guilty. " ■ Mr Stock said the defendant employed no assistance, and was closing at about 10 minutes past the time when the Inspector came along.
