THE GISBORNE CLUB
Yesterday afternoon witnessed a large catliering of members of the Gisborne Bowling Club on\ their green, where tho. play was of a very interesting description. Three games in 'the District Shield competition wore- got off, besides some practice matches,
District Shield Competition. West End—Zaohariah, Cussen, Roberts on, T. A. Crawford (skin) 17 beat Ivaiti —W. It. Clarkson, Mackintosh, Craig, Ponsford (skip) 15. The game was very even throughout. On llio thirteenth head the score was even 9 all. Kaiti then scored a single anti a three in succession. West End responded by making a couple on the sixteenth -head, the score then standing: Kaiti 13. West End 11. On the twentieth head Crawford got four m making the West End score 17 to 11. 1 onsford got a single in on the final bead, and last the game by two points. . City—Wilson, Pavitt (sub.), Harris, J J Martin (skip) 25 beat Colcbrook (sub.), H. Miller, E. Lewis, Gaudm (skip) 23. The play at this rmk exhibited some rather remarKable features. For the first half it was overwhelmingly in favor of the City team, who, on the thirteenth head, had scored 19 to their opponents’ six. The latter then rallied, making two singles, a live and a three on successive heads, tints raising their score to 16. On the eighteenth head Martin added three to his score, making it 22. The West End team replied by scoring five. On the twentieth head City put up three. The West End representatives made two on the final head, and lost the game by the narrow majority of two points. Kaiti—Kyine, F. W. Pettie, Ambridge. Eure (skip) 23 beat Whataupoko—T. Clarkson, Williams (sub.), Corson, Simson (skip) 19. Jibe play ivas slightly in favor of the Kaiti team till the concluding heads., when a A*ery interesting tussle took place. On the twentieth head Simson got in no fewer than six. thus; obtaining a lead of one point. On the twenty-first, T. Clark"mT7*4cading for Whataupoko, placed his first howl within tiro or three inches of the jack, where it remained till F. W. Pettie, Kaiti’,s number 2. carried the jack and lay the shot. His side then got in four other howls, scoring Ih'e on the head, and winning the game by four points. " Ivaiti lias now beaten West End on the aggregate by two points, and in the first round against Whataupoko has obtained a lead of four points. Handicap Singles.
G. K. Miller (6) 20 beat T. Corson (3) 16. One more game in the third round has to he played, and the Avinner will meet G. K- A 1 iHol* in the fourth round.
TUUANGANUICLUB
There was a good attendance lors at the Turangnuui Club's green yesterday afternoon, the members seeming only too anxious to lioa'c a “roll up” after their enforced retirement of nearly a fortnjglit owing to broken AA’.eatlier. The green was very lieavv and not at all in good condition -for plav. A number of practice games and a match in the Handicap Singles were placed. Afternoon tea Avas dispensed by Airs. H. Bradley and Aliss Wilkinson, the refreshments being much appreciated. The lolloAving is the result of the match game: W. AlePherson (21) beat b. Farrell (]2). —Up to about the 9th head the scores aa'ci’c ca'oii —6 all. 1 rom tins out, lioAvever,- McPherson scored- repeat, edlv for tlie next nine heads, being 21. to 6on tho 16th head. On the remaining firm heads Farrell put up 6, and thus suffered defeat- by nine points. During the afternoon the second round Avas declared closed, and tlie A latch Committe gave the RatchtteSomorvell game to Ratcliffe by default,! and struck out both players in the Hep-hurn-Hallam match.
