Another of those excellent detective stories of the Adventures of Russell Howard, by A. E. Jobson. appears in to-morrow’s literary' supplement. Readers will liud it quite as good as, the preceding story, and they will follow the methods of Russell Howard with a lively interest to the last line.
The Rev. L. Dawson Thomas received a cable message from Sydney on Wednesday stating that the condition of Mrs. Dawson Thomas, who recently underwent a serious operation, was such that it was desirable;,he should go to Sydney. Mr. Thomas accordingly left by tlie steamer on Wednesday.
Word was received in Gisborne yesterday that -the Warden for the Thames goldrnining district " has recommended the Minister lor Mines to grant an extension of the protection to the Waihi East Goldmining Company for a further six months, to allow the company time to raise capital.

As the outcome of the disturbance in Gladstone Road on Wednesday night two men named Janies McDonald and Albert Janies llawstrom pleaded guilty at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., to charges of disorderly conduct while drunk. McDonald, whose second conviction it was for a similar offence, was fined £2 and 2s costs or 4.8 hours’ imprisonment, while his companion in trouble was lined £1 and costs or 24 hours’ imprisonment. A man namecl Francis Seymour, for a second conviction |for drunkenness within nix months, was lined 10s and 2s costs, with the aiternaitve of 48 hours’ gaol.
The Wairoa-Gisborne road, oil the Tiniroto side is in a shocking condition at the present time. A party left the Southern town on Tuesday morning mtu eight o’clock in two buggies, and arrived in Gisborne yesterday morning after a very uncomfortable and strenuous journey. The worst portion was between Opouiti and Wacrcnga-n-kuri, and the travellers declared that the mud was on an average twelve inches deep over .all this part. The drivers had a terrible time in endeavoring to make the horses null up the steep grades. auA one of the number took off his shoes and stockings and pulled up liis pants to his knees so that lie could wade through the sticky slush and lead the tired brutes up the hills.
Some time was -occupied yesterday at the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. \Y. A. Barton, S.M., in the hearing of a claim by Wallace Sinclair, of Oamaru (Mr. Stock) v. Walter F. Fes and Mrs. lies (M r. L. T. Burn mi), lor £ll Ji fid, being the value of goods said to have been left in defendant's care in 1903. The evidence for the’plaintiff, taken in Dunedin, was read, and Mr! Barnard called three witnesses for the defence. 11. T. Seymour testified as to the value of the goods, and Mr. and Mrs. lies both denied that the goods were left in their care, blit stated that plaintiff bad given them voluntarily in part payment of his indebtedness to them, and for which they had entered a counter claim of £1,2 17s 6d. The evidence being of rather a eonnicting nature, His \\ orship reserved judgment.
