BY-ELECTION. ; THE STRATFORD-ON-AVON RESULT. United Press Association—Copyright May 5, The “Chronicle” describes the result of the Attercliffe by-election as an absurdity. Pointer was-chosen by a little more than a fourth of the total voters. The election for Stratford-on-Avon resulted: P. S. Foster (Tariff Reformer) 5374, Martin (Radical, ex-Canadian) 2747, Kincaid Smith 479. Mr Smith resigned, and sought re-election over the policy of compulsory military training, hut the electoral issue was tariff, reform and the navy. PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE. SALARY TO BE FIXED BY PARLIAMENT. LONDON, May 6. The Standing Committee of the House of Commons, by 15 to 13, decided, despite the Government’s opposition, that Parliament, and not the Trasury, shall fix the future salary of the President of the Board of. Trade, and the Bill, as amended, was reported to the House.
