SITTING IN GISBORNE.
he Arbitration Court, of which His Honor Mr Justice Sim is president, Mr S. Brown (employers’ representative) and Mr McCulloch (employes’ representative), wil sit at Gisborne on Thursdav next. Mav 13.
Up to the present two disputes have been set -down for hearing." The members of the Bakers’ Union will apply for a new award, the chief items in which are an increase in wages, and tho reduction of hours of work. In tho former £3 10s per week for the first hands, £3 per week for second hands, and £2 15s per week for bench hands, will be asked for. The present rate of wages is £3,* £2 10s and £2 5s respectively. In reference to the hours of work, it is proposed ta ask for 48 hours instead of 51 hours as at present. The members of the Painters’ Union <tf Workers are also making application for a new award, the chief alterations sought being: Increase of rate of wages for journeymen from Is 3d to Is 4sd per, hour; the inclusion of sign writers under the award, increase of rate of wages for country work from Is per day extra to Is 6d, and a concession in connection) with- board while on country work. Regarding the latter demand the men at present have to pay their owh hoard, quid an endeavor is to bn made to have a clause inserted, whereby all expenses over 15s per week mist be paid by employers. Hr Pryor .secretary to tho Employers’ Association, will arrive in Gisborne on Wednesday to represent the Master Painters, and probably the Master Bakers at the Court. Mr. 0.
