AUCKLAND, Alay_ 7. At the Police Court Wmiam WilsonThomas Costello,- Wm. Henry Chamberlain and Frank Brown, laboring men, were charged with having carried on. tote betting at the last Elierelie races. All pleaded guiltv, and each was fined.£3 and costs. Thomas Fanning, charged with receiving, and w liliam Harris with the theft of a purse containing; £4O belonging to H. L. Janies, a ladypassenger on the night express from Auckland to Wellington, were remanded to Taumarunui. PRICE OF POTATOES. OAAIARU. May 7. ■ 'The price of potatoes during the pastfew days has advanced to £4 per ton, f.o.b. Oamaru. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
GREYAIOUTH, Alay 7. A man named Frank Brennan attempted suicide by cutting his throat and wrist with a razor, and has been brought into the hospital. His injuries are not serious, and lie will be removed, to an asylum in a few days.
