Notwithstanding the week’s deb .ito, the operation of several of the Budge*; proposals is still obscure, especially the increment on land proposals. Representatives of the licensed trades dec do 1 that Mr. Lloyd-George’s Budget provided for £4,200,000, whereas the increase from licensed spirits would really produce eleven million. Hotel licenses are advanced enormously—the Savoy Hotel by £6250, the Ritz by £4250, Watney and Combes’ tied houses by an amount of £140,000, and Whitebreads‘ by £42,000. MR. BALFOUR’S CONDEMNATION.
PROPOSALS WILL INJURE THE WHOLE PRODUCTIVE CAPACITY OF THE COUNTRY.
At a meeting of the Primrose League Mr. Balfour declared the Budget proposals to lie inequitable, vindictive, based on no principle, and calculated in tbe long run to injure the whole productive capacity of the country. The proposals regarding income tax diminished Britain’s financial capacity to meet the stress of any great European conflict.
