WHEAT

[Pen Press Association.]

CHRISTCHURCH, May S. The local grain market is quiet but firm, owing to the slightly improved prices ruling in Britain. The inflated values in America, fluctuating every day, do not appear to affect prices appreciably either in Britain or the colonies. The business passing .locally is limited, most holders being unwilling to accept current quotations, which are 3s lid and 4s for Tuscan and Pearl, 3s lOd and 3s lid for Hunter’s. Very litttle has been placed on offer the last few days, and few sales have been made. Oats are moving off more steadily, but the market is, if 'anything, slightly weaker, though there is no change in vahies. The weakness is attributed mainly to the difficulty in securing shipping and a shortage of cornsacks retarding threshings. Potatoes, are in more inquiry for the North Island market. Current prices range from 45s to 50s at country stations. PRODUCE MARKETS. Messrs F. S. Malcolm and Co., auctioneers, report the following prices realised at their produce sales on Saturday : —Ducks Is 9d to 2s 3d, fowls Is 5d to 2s, eggs 2s 6d to 2s 9d, pumpkins 2s 6d to 3s sack, apples and pears Id to 2d per lb, onions 7s 6d cwt, potatoes Gs cwt (with a rising market), cabbages Is 9d doz, other, vegetables at usual rates. HOR SlTs ALES. Messrs Williams and Kettle, Ltd., yarded about 40 horses of various descriptions at their weekly sale on Saturday. Hacks sold from £3 12s 6d to Oil os, and harness horses from £9 to £ls. A few heavy horses were offered and passed in.
