AN AUCKLAND SUICIDE.
POISONING BY PHOSPHORUS

AUCKLAND, May 10. An inquiry into the death of a 14-year-old girl, named Elizabeth Lucy, Greenwood, Avho died at her 'father’s residence at. Paiunure on April 29th, was held to-day. The evidence showed that during her father’s absence from home the deceased took poison on April 24th. This fact was discovered next day byf.her step-mother, who was in charge of the house. Deceased did not in her stepmother’s opinion appear to be sufffficiently ill to .warrant medical aid being called in, and ho doctor saw the girl until April 29th. She bad-then become very ill, and although restoratives wore applied she died within.ten minutes after the doctor’s arrival. It Was stated that the deceased had been greatly disturbed by a severe cross-rex-amination by a lawyer during her. recent evidence in the Police Court in connection with a charge of assault, and that she dreaded undergoing another similar experience in the,Supreme Court. The jury returned. a verdict of death by phosphorus, poisoning, selfadministered, and expresed the opinion that an error of judgment was committed in not sending for a doctor sooner. ’ ' . >
