Preference to unionists is necessary if unionism is not to be destroyed, and, in the absence of unions, the force of public opinion could not be made effective in the rectification, by judical means, of admitted hardships. We must; therefore, either have unions or anarchy. In their absence, suffering and injustice would bo imposed upon either .workers or the employers, in triumphs which would be won by the arbitrament of preponderant power, and not by the exercise of the sentiment of the community, or- tho _ nearest approach to it, as expressed in the Arbitration Court—a tribunal that keeps the workers as well as the employers within bounds. ‘Oamaru Mai..
