HOCKEY.
YESTERDAY’S MATCHES. The second round of the hoekev competition was commenced on the Domain yesterday afternoon in fine, though threatening weather. The games were played on No. 2 ground, which was quite dry, but very rough, preventing fast play. WEST END 6, v. Y.M.C.A. 0. .'From the commencement of this game it was apparent that Vest End were the superior team, but on the plav they were hardly six goals better than Y.M.C.A. The latter players, although it was their first match, exhibited excellent combination, and show great promise. V est End’s goals wore secured by Bright (4), Pine and Malloy. jJr Armstrong officiated as referee. CIA TvAHA 4, v. CIVIL SERVICE 0. This also was a more evenly contested game than the scores would indicate, as for the greater portion of the game, the losers liad quite as much oi the play as their opponents. They suffered slightly from lack of combination, but played’with great determination. Kia Kaka exhibited good combination, and were also superior in.shooting within the circle. J. Pollock was instrumental in registering all four goals, and played a good game in the centre. Garrett and Coleman also played well for Kia Kalia, while for Civil Service Payne, Hargreaves, Stagpoole and Scott were the most prominent. ' Mr Armstrong, also controlled this game.
