The East Coast Mounted Rifles went into camp on the polo grounds, Makati ri, yesterday. About 50 men are under canvas, and a start will be made with work under Captain C. HeTuer Evans to-daja- Colonel A. Bauchop, officer commanding the district, is expected to arrive in Gisborne on Wednesday and visit the camp, and Captain Sandtmann, adjutant to the battalion, is to arrive next Saturday.

The Department of Agriculture is desirous of reminding sheepfarmors who have not yet sent in their sheep returns that they are liable to a penalty of £2O for failing to make a return of the number of sheep owned by them on the 20th Aprillf any §Ueop-owher has ceased to own sheep since making a return last year, he must nevertheless make a nil return this year, and is under a penalty for failing to do so. As the return of sheep in the' Dominion- is required to place before Parliament, the officers of the Department give the above notice in order to avoid if possible putting settlers to the expense of Court- proceedings.

In regard to a telegram published that M. Griffin had been disqualified by the Taranaki centre of tho Now Zealand Athletic Union for five years for supplying incorrect performances, Mr. Griffin, of Gisborne, who denies that it has any reference to him, has sent the following telegram to the Union : “Secretary New Zealand Athletic Union, Stratford,— Surprised- to hear of my disqualification. What lor? Kindly name event for which incorrect performances were supplied. State height of tho contestant. —M. Griffin. It is supposed that some other competitor must have entered under the name of M. Griffin.
