CATHOLIC DISABILITIES.
THE CORONATION OATH. A BILL SHELVED. (Received May 16, 4.45 p.m.) LONDON, May 15. Mr. W. Redmond’s Bill for the removal of Catholic disabilities was read a second time by 133 to 123, and was committed to a committee of the whole House, which is equivalent to shelving it. *
Mr. Asquith said ho approved of. the opening of the Lord Chancellorship and tho Irish Vice-Royalty to Catholics. The Sovereign’s accession declaration ho considered tho flimsiest and most unnecessary safeguard. He suggested the appointment of a committee to find a form of declaration inoffensive to any religious susceptibilities.
