THE OTTAWA TREATY. CAREFUL INVESTIGATION. United Press Association— Copyright. OTTAWA, May 18. The Canadian Parliament is discussing Senator Smith’s rider, attached at the last moment to the Ottawa tieaty affecting St. Mary’s river. Despite the recommendations of ex-President Roosevelt, President Taft, and Mr ‘Knox, Secretary of State, to modify the rider, Mr Smith refused, and the United States Senate ratified the treaty without obtaining indications of Canada’s approval or the approval of the British Ambassador at Washington.^ Sir Wilfrid Lanrier remarked that if the river was altered the situation involved wou’d he serious, the issues • * norpfnl investigation berequiring caitau ° , fore the Government could ask Royal assent to the treaty. the ST. lawrlnce channel. Brodcur, Minister of Marine and Fisheries, speaking m J minion House of Commons, said that the deepening of the St. Lawrence Channel to 30 feet and ~:.10 feet channel from Montreal to the sea would shortly be begun.
