THURSDAY .-COMPETITION

The frames in the Thursday championship for the Lysnar Challenge ■ Banner were continued on the Domain yesterday, the draw being: Gisborne v. Alhambra and Star v. City. The weather was beautifully fine, but No. 2 ground, on which the matches were played, was very rough. Air. Al. Osborne co.llt.ro.* led both "games to the entire satisfaction of the players. . GISBORNE (17) v. ALHAMBRA (3). Although beaten hv a large margin, Alhambra were by no means outclassed, and put up the best fight they have done so far. Just after the commencement they attacked 'stronglyr and kept Gisborne in their own quarters. Alter four minutes-play their efforts were rewarded by a try, Banka Turei getting over from a forward rush. Oman tailed to add the extra points. Gisborne now assumed the offensive, and tor the remainder of the spell kept Alhambra in the region of their own twenty-five. Faulty passing by the Gisborne backs spoiled several likely chances of equalising, hut from a scrambling run of the forwards Higgs scored. The major • points were not added. Shortly after this the interval was with the scores level. On the" resumption of play ’Gisborne were compelled to force inside, the Lrst minute. Even play in midfield followed, and Swain was prominent m a nice dribbling run to the Alhambra twentyfive. Here, a series of serums took place, and the 'Gisborne hacks, who had improved a great deal in, their passim', were'nearly over on severaLoccasI ions. From a scrum on the line Morse, who was playing an excellent game at half, sent tin- hall out to Gibson, who transferred to Swain, the latter sent it on to Pollock, who raced over at the comer. Newton made a good attempt <'oal. Gisborne continued to hold | the ■ ~„por- b.t

prottv try. Newton’s kick at goal was charged down. The next score was obtained by Neill’, who took a long pass from Swain and got over at the corner. Ho took the kick himself, but failed. A moment later clever passing by Morse, Swain, Gibson, and Pollock enabled Gibson to score another, and the final try, which was converted by Pollock. The whistle sounded shortly afterwards, leaving the scores: Gisborne 17, Alhambra 3. CITY (22) v. STAR (5). The result of this game was something in the nature of a surprise, Star being the more fancied team of the two. After a few moments’ play, Tocker obtained in midfield, and after beating a couple of opponents, transferred to AVyllie, who had a clear , run in, and grounded the baT between the posts. Luttrell teok the kick, but made a very poor attempt. Keeping up the attack* City had Star defending hard, and Tocker was again instrumental in a score, as, making a good opening, ho passed to Puflett, who got over. Puflett failed with his kick at goal. Star now displayed a little better form, and play was fairly even for a time, but the City men were not to bo denied, and a brilliant passing run by Tocker and AVy’lie from their own twenty-five ended in the former securing City’s third try. Puflett again missed an easy kick. Star took a turn at pressing, Kaipara, in the back division, and "Wilkinson and Davis amongst the forwards showing up prominently. Further play followed, and from a high kick, the ball rolled over Star’s line,_ where Witty,’ following up well, fell on it. Tocker failed to convert, and the whistle sounded for the interval. , On plav being resumed, Star forced the pace," and kept City hemmed in on their own line for a time. They were unfortunate in not scoring on several occasions, Kaipara and A\ ilkinson moi e than once being nearly over. Scrum after serum was formed on City s line, and eventual’v Kaipara secured and darted over. AVilkinson added tlie ex-tra-points with a lovely kick from a difficult angle. This reverse to City was, only temporary, xml although Star showed up much better than m the first spell, further tries were scored tor City by Tocker and Gatland, both, being's converted. The final scores were : City 22, Star 5. Y.M.C.A. CLUB. The following will represent the Y.M.C.A. in the matches on Saturday : Juniors v.
