A GISBORNE ARTIST.

SUCCESSFUL EQUINE STUDY.

i Miss Maud Farmer, »of tr Gisborne, whose works of art have frequently been the subject of very favorable criticism, arrived in Gisborne on Saturday morning from Wellington, where she has been for somo months engaged in painting a picture of Mr. W. E. Bidwili’s famous racehorse Elevation. The painting has attracted considerable attention, and will be landed in Gisborne on Wednesday morning, where it will be exhibited for a week. The following are some press extracts commenting on the picture: “Good painters of animals are very rare, chiefly owing to the long course of anatomical study that is essential to attain anything like truth in the. subject under treatment. Miss Maud Farmer, of Gisborne, has evidently made a study of that phase or art, otherwise her painting of Mr. W. E. Bidwili’s racehorse Elevation, now on exhibition at Mr. Butler’s studio on Lambton Quay, would not be satisfactory. Those who know the horso well state that the .artist has caught an excellent likeness, even to the peculiar shade of its ehestnutty-brown coat that gleams satin-like in the light. Miss Farmer has a delicate touch in color-blending and a true eye for proportion, and should do well in a. phase of art she is well adapted to pursue successfully.”—“Dominion.” The “New Zealand Times” states: “Miss Farmer, who is a pupil of Mr. C. N. Worsley, has succeeded well in presenting a faithful likeness of the horse. Her work gives much promise." The “Evening 'Post” says: horse, a dark chestnut, is depicted standing on a training track. The'outstanding muscles and the sheen or the horse’s satiny skin are admirably shown. Elevation won the Canterbury Derbv as a three-year-old, and was successful as well in other weight-for-age engagements. He was taken to Sydney to race for the Doncaster Handicap, but unfortunately broke down, and now lias been retired to the stud. Ine picture is an admirable one.""
