TvAIAPU (3) v. POVERTY BAY (0)
The match between a team from the Poverty Bay Itngby Union and one representing the Waiapu sub-Union, played yesterday at Toioga Bay, resulted in favor of the home team by the smallest possible margin—3 points to .nil. Tho match was played in perfect football weather, fine, without sun
The Waiajm team was as follows:---Waiapu.—full-back, Tate ; tlireerquarters, W. Newton, Aorere, C. Hyland; five-eighths, J. Watchorn (capt.) and Gerrard; half, Malm; forwards, Gilbert, Kensall, Fletcher, B. Lincoln, J. Lincoln, W. Crook, ltuka, P. Callaghan (wing). The Poverty Bay team has already been published. Mr. H. Walker officiated as referee. The game was strongly contested, but was played in a most admirable spirit, and there was not the least approach to roughness. The Coast forwards proved somewhat superior to those of the visitors, and the latter Avere on the. defensive for a great part of the time. About half through the ,first spell Malm secured the ball from a scrum and passed to Watchorn, who made a fine run and passed to Gerrard. from whom Aorere got and transferred to Hyland, who made a good dodging run and scored. Fletcher took the kick, but failed to increase the score. For the remainder of the game the play was of a fairly even character, and there Avas no further scoring. It AA as someAvhat remarkable that the ball AA'as only forced doAvn twice. Yesterday evening the visitors were entertained at dinner by the Waiapu sub-Union at the Tologa Bay Hotel, where Mr. J. T. Murphy provided an excellent repast. The chair Avas occupied by Mr. AY. Oates (president of the sub-Union), avlio, in a very happy speech, proposed the health of the Poverty Bay team, expressing a hope that the present ivould be the forerunner of other visits. Mr. L. Ingram, manager of the Poverty Bay team, responded. Mr. Newton, captain of the A-isiting team, proposed the health of the Waiapu team, and the toast was acknowledged by Air Watchorn. After the dinner a social took place, and the Poverty Bay players attended the gathering. POVERTY BAY RUGBY UNION. The usual weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Poveity Bay Rugby Union ivas held last night in the Masonic Hotel. Present: Messrs H. E. Maude (chairman). H. Bright. G. K. Pasley, W. Johnston, J. A. Eaton, and E. L. Maude (lion. sec.). The sub-committee appointed to go into the question of the rules for the Waiapu sub-Union reported that the rules AA'ere prepared and ivould be forAvarded bv next mail.
Some discussion took place as to the hour for the postponement cf matches, and it Avas resolved to leaA'e the hour at 12 noon, as hitherto. After discussion, it was resolved that there he a junior competition in the country, the matches to bo started next Saturday between the second fifteens of the Mak.uiri and To Kura teams. _On the motion of Air. Johnston it AA-'as decided to request the Referees’ Association to «upp y tAvo referees for the country matches on Saturday. The secretary of the Referees’ Association Avrote suggesting that the Union should supply printed forms on Avhicli to forward the names of players and the result of the match to the Union. —lt AAas decided to obtain the forms as suggested. It Avas also decided to instal a locker for the benefit of the referees, in Avhicli to keep the forms. The captain of the United Football Club Avrote in reference to the player AA'ho was injured in Saturday’s game, and asking for consideration in the matter of insurance, although the insurance fee in the particular instance had not been paid into the Union’s funds OAving to a misunderstanding.— It Avas decided that the injured players’ medical expenses up to £3 3s be paid out of the general fund of the Union, and not out of the insurance fund, as the rules were not complied with. It was generally thought by members that tho Union wished to help an injured player hut did not desire to establish a precedent for any similar case in futThe secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union wrote advising the Union of the suspension of several clubs in the Hawke’s Bay district for failing to pay dues. , Permission was granted to the y M.C.A. Club to use the ground early on Saturday for a practice match betAveen the juniors and thirds. It vas decided to inform tho club that all players except those engaged m cup contests shall be required to pay ac mission to the ground. __ Several additional players were !';*•' sed for the various clubs, and the co.oi maroon was alloived to the Mtirnuu Club. Red and black .with white sash were also passed as colors foi the Hi 0 School team. , , The question of tho proposed tour •for the Poverty Bay representative team was brought up, and the■chai man submitted a proposed itineiaiv viz , Auckland, Mananatu, 15 us Unions, Napier, and Hastings-It was decided that the secretary write to the Auckland Union endeavoring to hx a date for the opening of the toul. Minor improvements to the ground wore authorised, and the meeting terminated.
