GISBORNE CLUB. Tlio members of the Gisborne Bowling Club had a, highly successful day on their green yesterday. There was a large muster of players, the green was in very good order, and a number of very interesting games took place. Play began at 10 a.m. and was continued until”nearly 5 p.m., when the gathering darkness compelled its cessation. Three matches in the district shield competitions were got off. In the morning one City rink defeated West End and another was beaten by Kaiti. In the afternoon "YYhataupoko scored a win against West End. In this competition Kaiti is now'leading by four points, and if the Kaiti rink which is to meet Wliataupoko scores a win, it will gain the shield for its district. In the handicap singles Mackintosh beat Paltridge in the morning and Gr. K. Miller in the afternoon. These wins cr ivc him a place in the final. Gaudin and Kvme have to .play _ their game in the semi-final, and the winner will meet Mackintosh. A number of . pram,ice games were played during the cay. —Handicap Singles.— Mackintosh 20 beat Paltridge 15. Paltridge led until the 13th head when ho was 13 to his opponent's 7. The latter got three on the next head. Paltfidge responded by getting a single. Mackintosh put up three on the 16th head, and thenceforward had all the best ’of the play. Mackintosh (26) beat C. K. Miller (23) Mackintosh "obtained a strong lead during the first half of the game, and on the 11th head had scored 21 to Miller’s 7 . The latter made a couple on the 12th head, and thenceforward inner eased his score rapidly. He twice <rot in all his bowls, on, the loth and 18th heads, getting in 16 while Mackintosh only put up five. TURA NG A NUI CLUB. Yesterday was a field day for tho members of the Turaiigamu Club and a large gathering of players took advantage of the holiday. Play was commenced at 10.30 a.m., and was continued till the luncheon adjournment. At 2 p m play was resumed, and continued till dusk. * Besides a large number of practice sanies, three matches were got off and all the club’s competitions were brought to a close. Afternoon tea was provided bv Mr. J D. Jcune, the refreshments being dispensed by A osdames Ballantyne and Lewis and A iss Ballautyne. The results of the match games are as follows: Handicap Singles. n Hird (2) 24 beat W. McPherson a o ‘2O -This was the final of the competition. llird jumped oft Wlth t! ead and on the 7th head was 10 to 2 This advantage Hird maintained being 18 to 4 on the 13th head and finishing up on the last head 24 to 10. McPherson, receiving a handicap of W points, was thus defeated by 4 points. Hird thus wins the pair of bowls presented by Messrs Stewart and Co., Wellington. Bennett Cup. C F Lewis (16) heat J. J- Martin (1 r,V—This was Martin’s last game, in the competition Martin led oft, bein„ 7 to 3 oil the 7ih head, but on tin 12th head Lewis had evened up matteis -■> all Lewis scored two on the fqllov mg head but Martin responded with two twos’ the game then being m Martin s favor bv 13 to 11. On the 18th heat Martin was 15 to 12. Lewis got m < single on the next head. On the -6th head Martin, while lying one. earned the jack with his last howl, and gare his opponent two—ls all. Lovis got m a single on the last head and won. Ibis result put Martin and Hird tie for the Cup, and these two players then mot. Tho result was— nQ - B Hird (19) beat J- J. Martin (13). Hird led right throughout the game, being 7 to 2 on the sth head 12 to j on the 12th head, 13 to 9 on the loth head, and winning eventually by six points. This win gives Hird the honor of holding tho Bennett Cup and winning a gold medal.
