The Italian Geographical Society confers the highest gold medal on Lieutenant Sliackleton.
ANTARCTIC POSTAL SERVICE
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 27. Lieutenant Sliackleton, in liis capacity of postmaster, has addressed a. report to the Postmaster-General. He says that the first mail taken down contained some 800 letters, addressed to nonexistent persons, simply for the purpose of netting them returned. They were addressed to albatrosses, penguins, seals, John Frost, Mr. Iceberg, and so on, n The lieutenant, with dry humor, reports that the letters for the penguins were duly delivered to the surprise °f those interesting birds.” Their methods <u disposing of their corresnondenee I did nqt follow The seals also received thenletters. Letters addressed to icebergs and so forth were also delivered. The total mail was 1510 letters, and oou were despatched from King Edward yrry Land. He opened a branch post office in 88.5 south, on January 7, 1908 (1909). Photos arts to be sent of the post office first opened. Some 2000 letters passed through his hands, and the bulk of the stamps were sold to Ins company.
