POVERTY BAY CLUB MATCH. There was an exceptionally largo attendance at the go 11 links, on Saturday afternoon, when a match was p-layed between teams chosen b.v the President (Mr. Chas. Gray) and' the Vice- president (Mr. Godfrey Maclean) of the Poverty Bay Club. The weather was beautifully fine, and great interest was taken in the play. The majority of tlie players disdained to use the recognised grips or stances as laid _down by such ordinary players as Y ardon or IVaid and invented , strokes to meet the many difficult “lies” that were naturally encountered. Probably the most awkward bunker to negotiate was at the 16th green, just opposite Mr. A. S. Waclusmann’s private residence. Mr. Wachsmann, with the customary kindlv manner in which he has treated golfers throughout the season, dispensed refreshments to the players as they in turn played round to his residence, an act of hospitality which was highly annreciated by the players on the hot afternoon. A highly enjoyable match resulted in a victory for the Vice-presi-dent’s side by one game. Greatest interest centred in the game between the Hon. J. Carroll and Mr. V. A. Pyke. No doubt, as a result of his experience* in the House, the Native Minister “addressed” his ball better than did his opponent, to whom the fickle goddess was most unkind, and repeatedly gave him problems which would have defied a Vardon- or a Braid to solve. After playing three holes, which the politician reeled off in 27. and thus demonstrated his feuperoiritv to the complete satisfaction of his opponent, the pair decided to allow tlloir caddies to finish the match > by deputy, and repaired to the pavilion. In the majority of the games, lady friends of the players acted as caddies, and their advice was frequently sought and graciously given, but seldom carried, out with advantage.to the striker. Afternoon tea was nvovidod for the very large crowd present by the members of the Poverty Bay Cluln The match provided a great deal of interest, and attracted the largest attendance seen this season on the links.
