A REPRESENTATIVE MEETING.

A/largely attended meeting, representative of the leading Maori popple of the Poverty Bay district, was held in the Native Land Court office on .Saturday morning. , The Rev. F. W. diatterton, Prmci-. V pal of Te Rau Colloge, presided, and. \ explained that the meeting had been called together to consider what would be the best steps to take in an endeavor to diminish the serious amount of drinking at present existing amongst the Maoris of the district. Speeches on the subject were delivered by the Hon. Wi Pere, M.L.C., Dr. Tutere Wi Rep a. Mr. Harniora Hei and others. The various speakers appeared to be fully impressed with the' seriousness of the question and the urgent necessity of something being done in. the matter. Some of them were in favor of establishing an annual pledge to abstain from liquor, others favored a f suggestion that the Maori Councils should take more vigorous action to put a- stop to the prevalence of drinking. . It was found impossible to complete the meeting on Saturday, and it was decided to hold another meeting, on the same subject at an early date.
