»A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Dr. J. M. Mason, Chief Health Officer, retired from that position yesterday. He leaves on June 17th for London, where, during the coming year, lie will attend to various matters oil behalf of the eew Zealand Government. A Press Association telegram states that Major Sarah Young, formerly oi Wellington, is coming from Melbourne, to bond quarter of the Salvation Army to take tho position of women’s social secretary in the South Island of New Zealand. A Press Association telegram irom Hokitika, states that Mr. G. J. Roberts, Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands, who recently tendered his resignation', retired yesterday on three months’ leave of absence. Mr. Roberts has been a very old public oflieer in Westland, where he lias done splendid work and established an enviable public record. He has declined any valedictory presentations from the staff or News has been received that Mi. Frank deLautour, son of Mr. C. A. «e Lautour. who is a student at the wellknown electrical college, r a rad ay House, London ,luis come out excellently in liis first- year’s studies. In t'ie year’s final pass list (22 subjects) lie has obtained 17 first places and t" ° second, which; places him eamlv dux j with first-class honors and modal. IHe : course of work taken was electrical engineering, mechanical drawing, theoretical physics, and electric technology, practical physics in workshop chonusti \ and mathematics.
