The -warship Challenger returned, tc Lyttelton from Akaroa on Saturday and leaves for Dunedin to-day. FRUITGROWERS’ CONFERENCE. The Canterbury Fruit-growers’ Association on Saturday evening passed a resolution in favor of holding a general conference of growers at Nelson. THE “TRUTH” LIBEL CASK An application for a new trial in the case of Stringer v. John Norton, in which the jury awarded £2OOO damages, was filed' on Saturday. The application will be heard on June 9th. SUPPLYING LIQUOR TO DRUNKEN MAN. Roderick McKenzie, of the Excelsior hotel, was fined £5 for supplying liquor to an intoxicated man. The* license was not endorsed. THE TIMBER COMMISSION. WELLINGTON, May 31. The Timber Commission have- been granted an extension of time to make a report. They will probably submitit about the end of June. B ANKRUPT'S APPLICATION FOII DISCHARGE. When Conrad Wflkening, contractor,' applied for an order for dicharge from ’bankruptcy, Judge Cooper questioned, the contention of bankrupt s counsel that the trouble was due to misfortune. He pointed out that bankrupt went int-o land and building speculation with ho capital, leaving his wife comfortably off.
