HOTEL LICENSES.
THE REDUCTION VOTE
[Per Press Association.]
AUCKLAND, June 1. When tho first application lor a license came before the Auckland City Licensing Committee to-day, the chairman, Mr. Cullen, S.M., said the Committee had decided to hear all the applications for licenses, and then decide which would bo renewed after hearing all the evidence.
Mr 0. Nicholson,, solicitor for several licensees, said that meant calling evidence as to every hotel. The practice hitherto in districts where reduction was carried was for the Bench to intimate the number of houses it proposed to close, also those it was prepared to grant renewals to. Mr. Cullen said the Committee had reports of the police on accommodation, but they were not prepared to accept these. They could call evidence. Mr. Nicholson pointed out that one licensee, feeling sure of renewal, might not call evidence, while another, less favorably situated, might, with the result that the latter might secure a renewal. DUNEDIN. June 1.
The Dunedin South Licensing Coramitte met to-dav, and refused the renewal of three licenses, the maximum allowed, as the result of the reduction mandate at the local option poll. Jbe question of issuing bottle licenses was held over, pending the decision of the City l.ieeiiri'vr- Committee next week.
