THE DREDGE ENGINEER.

[To The Editor.]

Sir, —With reference to the paragraph in your issue of this morning’s date, regarding the appointment of Mr. A. F. Long as dredge engineer, it looks very much like of case of no local men need apply. Was it because they were, .afraid of a fully qualified marine engineer getting the job, that Mr. Long .was brought from the Blackball coal mine on the West Coast? Or is lie to act as a kind of warming-pan for Air. Mackio, till that gentleman’s return from his trip, when he will hand over the job as quietly as he received it? I think, Sir, it is about time our local bodies were compelled to advertise any vacancies on their staffs, instead of making secret appointments. In Gisborne it seems to me that a man cannot get a job unless he belongs to a band or society of some sort or other; his qualifications don’t seem to be taken into account at all.— I am, etc., “GREASER.” Gisborne, June 2.
