CONVICTION FOR SUNDAY TRADING.

TWO PARNELL HOTELS CLOSED

AUCKLAND. June 2

The Parnell Licensing Committee decided to refuse licenses to the Star and Garter Hotel, Panmure, and the St. Helier’s Hotel, at St. Helier’s Bay. The two hotels both belong to -Messrs Hancock and Co. They are estimated to represent a money value of £SOOO, the St. Helier’s house being worth £3OOO, and tlie Panmure Hotel £2OOO.

WELLINGTON, June. 2. At the. Magistrate’s Court to-day, William Shorter, licensee of the White Horse hotel, Ngahauraliga, was fined £5 and costs for Sunday trading on May 23rd. William Davis, barman at the" hotel, was fined £3 and costs for selling liquor on the same date. WELLINGTON LICENSES.

The Licensing Committee to-day approved of all applications for transfers anti renewals.

CASE AGAINST A DENTIST—VERDICT FOR DEFENDANT.

WELLINGTON, June 2

In the Supreme Court the special jury in the action Rose Galvin, v. 1. E. K. Burgess, a dentist, claiming £5Ol damages for bodily harm caused by alleged unskilfulness in extracting a tooth, returned a verdict in favor of the defendant, who did not ask tor costs.

CONSTABLES CONVICTED OF ASSAULT.

At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr. Riddell, S.M., gave his decision in the case in which police constables John E. Watson and William Joseph Gardiner wore charged with assaulting William Hollo ad hits wife on the night of May 10. His Worship commented in strong terms on the conduct of the men. lie had carefully considered the case from every side, and it there was a possible chance of finding some redeeming feature in favor of defendants ho should be glad to do so, but he could not do bo. Watson was fined the maximum penalty of £lO, and Gardiner £o. Gardiner was also convicted of assault on. Mrs. llolfe, and sentenced to -i days’ imprisonment.
