BOROUGH COUNCIL.

VISIT TO KAITARATAHI AND WAIHIRERE.

Yesterday the Borough Councillors, following out the policy of becoming personally acquainted Avith localities and conditions which haA’c an important bearing upon municipal affairs, visited tlie shingle bed at Kaitaratahi, and later the quarry at Waihirere. Those Aviho attended avere : His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), 'Vs, J. Maynard, G. Smith, J. Somervell, G. Barton, and W. Pettic, Air. E. Lysnar, Air. R. D. B. Robinson (Toavu Clerk), and Air. AI. Morgan (Borough Overseer). At Kaitaratahi the newly-installed grab Avas seen working, and it accomplished a thoroughly satisfactory test. From the speed with which it carried out its Avork it was evident to the Councillors that, if sufficient railway trucks Avero available, there Avou’d be no trouble in getting largo supplies of tho gravel in from Kaitaratahi expeditiously and cheaply. The value of the gravel for road-making purposes Avas not se unanimously conceded, though the Alayor declared that, as a surface dressing for any but the main thoroughfares, it is entirely satisfactory. Tlie Ormond Road is treated in this Avay, and is in a very satisfactory condition, but the graA'cl used there had first been screened, which adds 2s 6d a yard to the cost. Special attention Avas draAvn to tho line leading to tho gravel pit, Avhich, et had been alleged, was too flimsy to stand the strain that Avould bo put upon it. The rails looked extremely light, but they seemed to bear the Aveight of the grab without much movement being shmvn. At Waihirere lunch Avas partaken of, after Avhich the party thoroughly inspected the borough’s reserve. It was evident to all present that an abundance of stone could be readily obtained from this source if a trarmvay Avero laid down to connect to the railway. Tho stone is not nearly so good as that obtainable from PatutaLv, but it is considered quite good enough to furnish the foundation for the streets of the town.
