THE LATE MRS. G. P. DONNELLY.

THE HON. J. CARROLL’S CONDOLENCES.

[Per Press Association.]

HASTINGS, June S. The funeral oi' Mrs. Donnelly wiit take place on Thursday afternoon at Omahu cemetery. The remains were removed to Omahu pa yesterday, where Natives are collecting from all parts The tangi will be one of the most memorable ever held. Mr. Donnelly has received hundreds of condolences. The Native Minister wired as follows: “At this hour, old friend, I feel for you deeply. Though not unexpected and a happy release to her from great suffering, Borne so long with such fortitude, Anni’s .death, is not only a great blow to yourself and Mrs. Eerry, but -'s a momentous event in the history of fb e Maori people. Representative of a noble line and ancestry, she has maintained their highest traditions. Endowed with great intelligence and the* fighting blood of her forbears, was ever in the lists when the rights of her people were menaced; and in the legal battles that she was unfortunate enough to take part in, she combined mastery and skill, with a thorough knowledge of the facts and rights of her claim, and so gained victories that fell to few of her sex. To her foresight and unswerving loyalty many of her people owe their prosperity to-day. In addition to a remarkable personality her public-spiritedness and energy have kept her always in the forefront of progress in this Dominion, and helped towards a truer appreciation of Maori citizenship and Maori aspirations. Such women as A rim can be ill-spared in any community, but- I trust the general expression of sympathy that will be extended to yon and yours will materially help to soften the touch of sorrow in regard to those left behind. She played her part faithfully and well, and after a strenuous and useful life, sleeps the long sleep that comes to all.”
