COOKS’ AND WAITERS’ UNION. A deputation from the Cooks’ and Waiters’ Conference waited on the Alinister for Labor with a request for assistance in ameliorating the lot of workers at their calling. The speakers strongly condemned the conditions under which cooks and waiters! had to work. The Alinister said the hours mentioned were, to say the least, unreasonable. Ha w'ould lessen them, if he could do so. As to the condition of the workers, that was of supreme importance. .He had seen in backyards in Wellington conditions simplv revolting. The matters would receive consideration by Cabinet. A BANKRUPT’S LIABILITY. The question of -a bankrupt’s liability W'as involved in a civil action in which the Te Aro Loan Co. sued G. B. Lusk for £29. It appeared that Lusk, while bankrupt, signed a promissory note in renewal of a promissory note given before he was adjudged bankrupt. Dr. AlcArthur, S.M., held that the original note was a debt payable in bankruptcy under section 320 of the Bankruptov Act, and an order of discharge released bankrupt from that debt-. Judgment was entered for defendant. NEW ZEALAND IJEAIP. .The returns of hemp graded in the Dominion during Alay total 5476 bales, an increase of 1114 bales on the corresponding period of 1908. The henip graded for the twelve months ending 31st Alav totalled 75,470 bales, a decrease of 39,474 bales for the twelve months. FOUR ALARAIS OF FIRE IN ONE NIGHT. CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. OAAIARU, June 8. The Harbor Board to-day decided to accept the tender of J. Lothian for dredging the harbor, at a cost- of £10,833, on lines of tlie scheme formulated by. Mr. AY. H. In carrying out the work the Progress will be utilised as a stationary dredge. ‘ v AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTION IN SOUTH CANTERBURY. ~TDTA.ru, June 8. The Education Board to-day took a definite step iu regard to an agricultural instructor, resolving to offer the post of instructor to Dr. Hillgendorf, now of Lincoln College, at a salary of £4OO a year. The Board feels safer in undertaking this with the new capitation regulation for the purpose, and several local bodies promise subsidies. AIEASLES IN TIAIARU. An epidemic of measles is reported from the Timaru South infant school. This school escaped when the other borough schools were a fleeted a few months ago. • AN ACTION FOR DAAIAGES.
