FREE SCHOOL BOOKS
THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION’S REMARKS. (Per Press Association.) ' AUCKLAND, June 9. At a meeting of the Board of Education, strong exception was taken to the statement of the Minister for Education regarding free school books. It was stated that the grant offered to the Board was sufficient to provide only the books deemed necessary, which 'parents had willingly provided hitherto, but before .a grant can be made the Minister insists on the Board certifying that none of the pupils who are to have free books have been asked or required to buy any additional reading book which the grant would not provide but which all concerned considered i'ndispensible. It was resolved to co-operate with other Boards to have a more reasonable course followed.
