THE RECENT COURSING MEETING
ACTION BY THE SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUEL TY TO ANIMALS.
Yesterday afternoon a meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held, Colonel Porter (president) in the chair. Mr. R. The!wall, Inspector for tho Society, submitted his report (which has already been published) upon the conduct of the coursing meeting held last week on the Park racecourse.
The question of the cruelty of coursing as a pastime "was discussed at length, and it was resolved—“ That a petition bo prepared at once and presented to Parliament urging the abolition of enclosed coursing as conducive to l acts of cruelty, and having evil effects, and that other centres throughout tjhe Dominion be asked to co-oper-ate in the movement. 1 ’ The following notice of motion was given—“ That this Society is of the opinion that the sport of enclosed coursing is one that ought not to be supported by the public, as being opposed to the true instincts of sport, and involving unnecessary cruelty.” A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Thelwall for his report, and it was decided to lay informations against certain persons who were in charge of the coursing meeting in question if, in the opinion of the Society’s solicitor, prosecutions can be sustained. A vote of thanks was passed to the press for the action taken in regard to the recent coursing meeting.
