COMPULSORY TRAi (Per Press Association.) HASTINGS, June 9. Mr. McNab addressed a crowded and enthusiastic meeting last night. His speech was frequently punctuated with loud applause. A resolution was unanimously carried, “That this meeting is in full sympathy with the object of the National Defence League in the endeavor to bring about compulsory training.” A RAILWAY LINE DUPLICATED. CHRISTCHURCH, June 9. The duplication of the railway line between Addington and Rolleston has been completed, and the double track was brought into use on Monday. A good deal of work has had to be undertaken in connection with the erection of new signal boxes to meet the demand of the new service, and there is still a little “finishing off” work to be done, but all necessary appliances for the working of tile lines have been installed, and the Railway Department officers have had no difficulty in handling the traffic under the new conditions. THE PROGRESS OF RETRENCHMENT. WELLINGTON, June 9. The pruning Knife which has been applied to several Government Departments already, has reached the Tourist Department. A number of clerks employed in the Wellington office received notice this morning that their services would not be required after a l given date. “TRESPASSING” ON A RACECOURSE. Alfred Farrell was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with trespassing on the Trentham racecourse. He was fined £3 and costs, but on it being pointed out that the costs were unusually heavy, totalling £8 14s, the Magistrate reduced the fine to £l. STREET BETTING. Judgment was given to-day by Mr. Riddell, S.M., in the case of James Ham, charged with having used Willis Street on April 29 for the purpose of bookmaking contrary to the city bylaws. The defence was that the money which had passed between the defendant and several men was money which was being repaid by men who had borrowed small sums at various times. Defendant admitted that he was a bookmaker. and said he was also an employer in the coal business, and had an ordinary transaction in the street with some of his men. Detective Cassells described accused as a “walking tote. His Worship entered a conviction, and imposed a fine of £3 and costs. ALLEGED ASSAULT. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Peter Williamson Tait was committed for trial on a charge of. assaulting David McCall and Martin Munday in a boarding-house on May 28. Tait and McCall quarrelled about a letter the former had given tho latter to deli\ cr. Tait called McCall names, whereupon' McCall struck Tait, who, it is alleged, stabbed McCall several times with a ■knife. Mrs. Munday, tho landlady, in attempting to separate the men, was stabbed) in the leg. Accused pleaded not guilty. DUNEDIN LICENSING COMMITTEE. A DECREE NISI GRANTED. TIMARU, June 9. The sittings of the Supreme Court concluded to-day. A decree nisi was in the case of Kerr v. Kerr, wife’s petition, on the ground of cruelty and drunkenness. A BOTTLE LICENSE REFUSED. DUNEDIN, June 9. When an application came before the Licensing Committee this morning foi a bottle license, the comuiitteo refused the application on the ground that they doubted their jurisdiction to deal with these licenses.' The Licensing Committee to-day granted licenses! to the Royal Albert and Wain’s Hotels. Four, the Central, Gladstone, Prince of Wales, and Rambow, wore hold over till 21st, and two of those must go. AV&in’s was ordered to close the bade bar, and the licensee consented.
