THE NEW DREDGE.
THE CONTRACT SIGNED
In accordance with a clause in the special resolution authorising the purchase of a ne'w dredge, a form ol‘ contract was drawn un by Messrs Chrisp and Coleman, the board’s solicitors. This document has been submitted and approved, and was signed yesterday by Messrs John Townley (chairman), J. B. Kells (member), and James Wm. Whitty (secretary), and T. Alston Coleman (s^icitor). The following are tlio most essential clauses in tho agreement, by means of which it will be seen that every effort has been made to conserve the interests of the ratepayers. (1) Tiie builders guarantee to build, equip, and complete for the Board a twin-screw, stern well combined bucket and suction hopper dredger according .to specifications and drawings annexed, constructed of best materials, fitted throughout with electric light, classed A 1 steel dredger at Lloyds’ special survey, with certificate supplied, and boilers to Board of Trade rules. (2) The vessel to be completed and classed as above and ready for trials on the Clyde, Scotland, not later than the 27th January, 1910. and thereafter sent by builders at their own cost and expense to New ziealand. Penalty, £•-< per day except delayed by strikes, etc. (3) power to purchaser, agent, or inspecting engineer to inspect and examine during building, and covenant to remove all materials and re-executo any work done not to satisfaction. (4) Price, £35,100 nayable by instalments of £5850 each, free of exchange, payable on certificate of value at time of payment. (5, 6,7, 8) Usual clauses as to materials on premises benic vested in purchaser; bankruptcy urovisions; insurance in joint names; and as to extra work. . (9) Vessel to be delivered at the wharf at me port of v»i*borne, and before, acceptance by the nurcliaser shall, for one calendar month after annul, bo well and thoroughly maintained by the builders', fair wear and, tear only excepted, the risks, costs, and expenses of such month’s maintenance being paid by the builders. ' (10) During such month, the purchaser provides all stores, etc., pays the wages and ordinary working expenses. (11) Before delivery and acceptance, vessel to bo properly tried and tested as a dredger by builders at the inoutli and in the channel of the Turanganui river at such places as purchaser directs: all risk of such trial and testing shall be borne by the builders; no delivery complete otherwise. It is exprosslv stipulated that if the drcdgei at such trial fails to dredge by cutting and lifting at least 400 tons ol stiff clay per hour, or when working in papa rock at least 50 tons, per hour, or when working in sand fails to dredge with tlie sand pump and suction pipes at least 600 tons per hour, m accordance with the guarantee given, the purchaser may refuse to complete the contract, and may reject tho vessel and refuse to take delivery thereof and recover all sums previously paid on account of tlic price beforo such trial, etc. M2) Vessel at tho builders’ expense and risk to be dry docked in a. New Zealand port, and coated with two coats of anti-corrosive and anti-loul-ing paint. , , (13) Drawings to he suplied iiee.
