HARBOR IMPROVEMENT.

NEW WORK COMMENCED AND

INTERRUPTED

The work of endeavouring to improve the entrance to the river channel by means of a series of cuts in the groyne, as proposed by Mr L. G. P. Spencer, A.M.1.C.E., and adopted by the Harbor Board was commenced yesterday. Tho first cut was marked out, and a start was made in removing the solid concrete, but tbe work was suddenly interrupted. The local Collector of Customs received a telegram the Secretary of the Marino Department stating that the work must be stopped until duplicate plans had been torwarded and approved and the work sanctioned by the Marine Department, and until the approval of the Governor-in-Council has been obtained.

On receipt* of this information the woi'k was immediately stopped, and Mr Spencer was requested to supply duplicate plains of the work. The secretary of the Harbor Board (Mr J .W. Witty) hopes to be able to forward these to Wellington by to-night’s steamer, but it is anticipated that there will be at least a fortnight’s interval before work can be resumed.
