LADIES ON DEFENCE QUESTION

(Per Press Association HASTINGS, June 19. The Mayoress, supported by Lady Itussoll and Mrs Goring, presided over ft large meeting of ladies. Addresses Verc given by Colonel Goring and Sir W. Russell, at the conclusion of which a resolution was unanimously carried that the ladies of Hastings express the opinion that no system of defence will be satisfactory unless based on universal military service. SOCIAL TO MR. W. T. WOOD. PALMERSTON N., June 19. There was a large assemblage at a social to Mr W. T. Wood last night. The speakers included Messrs Lawry and Remington, M.IVs. Guinness has written to .Sir Joseph Ward, urging him to bring under the notice of the Imperial Defence Conference the desirableness or constructing an Admiralty harbor at Port Elizabeth. Since that time about £ISOO has been exmended in getting surveys made, and Sir Joseph will, it is understood, do his best to get the authorities to amu-ove of a scheme. AMERICAN BOY VISITORS. A detachment of boys from the Columbia Park Club, California, arrived in Wellington by the Manapouri, and landed yesterday. They are in charge of Major S. S. Peixotto, who has made it his business, so he explains, to concentrate his attention on boy life, and see what the poorest quality of city boys can be taught to do. The boys of the club are not waifs or street arabs, but sons of the jxjorer classes, who do not get the necessary home training and recreation. Recreation is provided, and moral influence exerted, the boys being taught to lead clean, wholesome lives. The permanent member’ship of the club is about 150. The club is undenominational. and no charge is made to the boys. The touring party is giving entertainments in various parts of New Zealand. N ON-COLLA PS IB LE LIFEBOAT. Mr Fisher, a Wellington inventor, tried his nun-collapsible lifeboat from the Government steamer Tutane'kai today. The boat is evlinddical with conioaf ends built of steel, and will carry GO passengers. With several persons aboard tiie boat was slipped from the deck of the Tutanekai. As the, result of the Collector of Customs’ preliminary inquiry into the wreck of the auxiliary schooner Tuhara, at Mahia, her master, Captain McNabb, was absolved from any blame, and has had liis papers returned to him. SUPPOSED ROBBERY. T. H. Dawe, of Port Aliuriri, met with a serious loss at the recent Hastings races, under circumstances that point to robbery. Mr. Duavo Avas carrying about £6O in notes and some title deeds in a small Avallet in his pocket, and felt his possession safe, before going up on to the grandstand. On coming doivn to the JaAvn again shortly afterwards lie found that his money ivas gone. The police, are making inquiries. TWO YOUNG BURGLARS CAUGHT. CHRISTCHURCH, June 20. Two lads.
