BUSH FELLING AT WAITOTARA. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON,, June 22. Fifty igen leave Wellington next week for Waitotara to do bush-felling at 30s per acre. Mr. Collins, of the Labor Department, is at Waitotara making arrangements for the reception of the men, who are to be controlled by the Labor Department. ADVERTISING NEW ZEALAND SCENERY. Mr. S. H. Moreton, a well-known Canterbury artist, is writing to tho Tourist Department suggesting art competitions in paintings as a means of advertising the landscape and scenery of the Dominion. He states that it is well known to all but the most prejudiced that the best scenery of New Zealand is to be found in Westland. FIRES IN THE DOMINION. HOKITIKA, June 22. It was stated at the; annual meeting of the Fire Board last, night by representatives of the Underwriters’ Association that in spite of the efficiency of brigades, fires, in the Domihion are great l - on the increase. Last year insurance companies paid over £575,000 in fire loses, and the fire, waste must have been well over over £600,000. A GUN ACCIDENT. WAIEOA, June 22. A gim accident occurred at North Clyde at 6.30 on Sunday evening. Two lads, aged 17, W. Johnson and J. Finucane. were out shooting. Society to-day, at the annual meeting, allocated £4OOO for the coming year’s expenses, an increase of £SOOO on last year’s expenses. The membership of the society is now over a thousand. Last year's operations re, suited in a net profit of over £SOO. Mr N. Kettle was re-elected president. MOPtSE SYSTEM OF SIGNALLING. WESTPORT, June 22. The Morse system of night signalling is to be installed at Cape Foulwind lighthouse in September. SOLICITORS IN' TROUBLE. DUNEDIN, June 22. Mr. Justice Williams was engaged all day hearing a motion of the Council of the Law Society of Otago and Southland that a rule nisi be granted by the Court calling upon F. Z. and W. L. Moore, solicitors, to answer allegations contained in an affidavit to show cause why their names should not bo struck off the roll. TRADES AND LABOR POLITICS. INVERCARGILL, Juno 22. The Trades and Labor Council passed a motion strongly protesting against the prorogation of Parliament during Sir Joseph Ward’s absence; also, commending the action of Mr. .Hogg in preferring to stick to principles latlioi than place and power, and assuring him of a hearty welcome if he addresses a meeting in Invercargill. DEATH FROM A HORSE'S KICK. PALMERSTON N-, June 22. Thomas Edwards died in the hospital to-dav. On Sunday last, at Feilding, ho was taking tho cover off a horse when the animal kicked him in the stomach. RETURN OF AN ALLEGED DEFAULTER, CHRISTCHURCH, June 22. Frederick Marshall, late manager of the United Farmers’ Coal Company, who was arrested in Melbourne on a warrant from Christchurch for dotalcations in connection with the company’s finances, returned to Christchurch this evening in the charge of Detective R. Ward.
