MILITARY BALL.
EAST COAST MOUNTED RIFLES. The East Coast Mounted Rifles hope that their eighth annual ball, which is to take place to-night, in the Garrison Hall, will be the most successful function of the kind ever held in connection with the squadron. They certainly deserve that it should he so, for they have worked hard to obtain success. The officers and non-commission-ed officers, under the energetic direction of their commanding officer. Captain Hellier Evans, have, acted as a committee of management, and have' got all the arrangements well in hand. Yesterday they devoted many hours to tho preparation of the Garrison Hall for the gathering, and the result was highly satisfactory. They were bold enough to attempt to decorate vfie largo hall, and succeeded in doing so to very good effect. Mags and foliage were the materials employed, and the use made of them was highly effective. Tho former have been suspended on the walls, and the latter arranged below and between them. Native foliage has been used for the purpose, ferns and palms predominating. The band platform, in the centre of the floor, is adorned in uniformity with the scheme of wall decoration, the Imperial colors —red, white, and blue—being blended effectively with the green of New Zealand foliage. The general arrangements for the gathering appear well calculated to ensure the enjoyment of those who are to participate therein. Details of the principal of these have already been published.. It may- be added that a special buffet is to he provided for the supply of light refreshments, in addition to the supper,' and that the seating accommodation is to he divded into numbered “bays.” Tho object of tho latter arrangement is, of course, to facilitate, the finding of one’s partner. A space is ruled off on tho programme! for entering the number of the "bay” wherein the. lady is seateu, opposite Iter name. Captain Evans ana the other members of the committee were at- work till a late hour last night in completing tho preparations. .i?
