The Liberal Whip has issued, an appeal to members to organise a demonstration in tho constituencies to counteract the efforts of Mr Long’s Budget Protest League. The distribution of half the proceeds of the increment tax among local authorities! is intended to secure to cities and towns a fair share of the value •created by their enterprise-.. THE LAND TAXES. AMENDMENT TO REDUCE INCREMENT DUTY DEFEATED. (Received Juno 24, 9.55 p.m.) . LONDON, June 24. The House of Commons, by 322 to .117, rejected Mr. T. A. Herbert’s (Liberal member for South Bucks) amendment to reduce the increment duty to •5 per cent.. Several Liberals supported it. Others abstained from voting. A fruitless discussion upon the proposal to grant municipalities half tho proceeds of the increment duty followed. Twenty-three Liberals voted with the -Opposition on Tuesday in the division on Major Prettjman’s amendment to exempt agricultural land from the increment duty.
