ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT AIANGAPOIKE. While working on the Mangapoike road formation contract through the Pa pa tu station on Thursday, a serious accident happened to Mr. B. Dennehy, the well-known contractor. Mr. B. Dennehy was loosing some boulders on the edge of a cliff with a crowbar, when the rook he was levering gave way, carrying with it a part of the roadway, on which Mr. Dennehy stood. Mr. Dennehy was precipitated to the bottom of the cliff, a distance of about 50ft, and received serious injuries to his head. The injured man was carried to Waingakc. Dr. Scott had been telephoned for, and on arrival at onceattended to Mr. Donnelly’s injuries. Yesterday it was considered advisable i,o remove the patient to the Gisborne Hospital, where he now lies in a critical condition. A MINER DROWNED. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 25. . Andrew Wilson, a miner, aged 40, was drowned in the Waipori River near the township this morning. Deceased had been drinking. The body lias been recovered. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. NELSON. June 25. A man named Geo. Aldridge attempted suicide at Manu to-day by cutting his. throat. Lie lies in a sJnous condition in Nelson hospital. He had been despondent lately. , A SUDDEN DEATH. INVERCARGILL, June 25. Staff-Sergeant Major Taylor, of the Otago military district, who lias been stationed in Invercargill for the last three years, died suddenly tins evening while reading a newspaper at his home. Tim cause of death Is supposed to > e heart failure. Sergt-Major lay. or came from Scotland to Otago about nine or ten years ago. and he was exceptionally popular with volunteers. He was 40 years of age. DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY. FEILDIXG, J une 25. * Mr. AY. D. Nicholas, one of the oldest residents of the district, died <?an> this morning, aged 70. He was for manv years a builder and contractor, and was afterwards supervisor lor bridges, etc. OLD MAN COMMITS SUICIDE. MASTERTON, June 25. \w old colonist named Brown Hunt was found dead at his residence, Opaki. this morning with a revolver-wound m the head and a weapon m his hand. He lived alone, and Is believed to have considerable means. He was .*6 years 0 r a o-e. No cause can he assigned roi the act. He had probably been dead since AVednesday.
