SCHOOL COMMITTEES
GISBORNE. The monthly meeting of the Gisborne School Committee was held last evening. Present: Air. J. Somervell (chairman), Airs. Walker, Miss Morris, Messrs G. Spence, G. Wildish, F. AY. Itiach, W. L. File (secretary), and F. J. Rowley (head master). CORRESPONDENCE. The Seventh Day Adventists wrote stating that the new fence between their church and the school caretaker’s residence had been erected, and asking for half the cost. ~ A letter was received from Air. J. J. Alartin drawing the attention of the committee to the state of his yard and stables, which had been saturated by the flow from the school grounds and from the school swimming bath. Mr. Read, representing the- Cooperative Company, also waited upon tlie committee to draw their attention to the fact that the water from the school grounds drifted into the Co-op-erative Supply Stores yards. Tho matters contained in the above letters were referred to the "Works Committe to inquire into. . • The .Hawke's Bay Education Board forwarded ' the certificate of Miss Black, the applicant for the position of assistant-.at -the Gisborne -tecliool,<»~anti asked for a certificate of health ixom the committee, on the production -Mf which the appointment will he made. THE 'SWIMMING BATH.
The secretary of the . Gisborne Swimming Club (Mr. 0. R. Olgcn) forwarded the following report on "the first season':—"Tho Swimming Club during its first season has done fairly well, it lias a membership of A seniors, 6/ minors, and seven ladies, making a total of 71. Of these, at least 20 have learned to swim in the baths, and about 30, who had just learned the rudiments of swimming, have made themselves quite proficient in tho art. The members took great interest in the club, and there was always a good attendance at tlie bath during bathing hours. The club held two carnivals during the season, and the results in both were most satisfactory, being patronised and enjoyed by the public. Tho finances of the club are sound, considering the small inemuership. ‘.riie total subscriptions amounted to £2o 3s 6d. The receipts from the carnivals came to £9 12s 3d, other sources id 17s 6d, other contributions, such as donations, etc., £2 2s; making a grand total of £4l 15s 3d. The expenditure was as follows: To School Committee on subscriptions £l6 Is, 20 per cent, of gate at carnivals £T 18s sd; total. £l7° 19s sd; other expenses amounted to £l3 ss; making a total expenditure of £3l 4s sd; thus leaving, the club with a credit balance of £lO 10s lOd.” Mr Rowley forwarded a report -showing tlie r>rogress in swimming made by the school children during the season; The financial report of tho Bath Committee, showing an overdraft of £l9 9s 6d, was received, and it was decided to pay up the overdraft and take over the management of the bath. Air. Wildish moved that a hearty vote of thanks he given to Mr. Rowley for the great interest he had taken in the school hath. Mr. Spence seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Air. Rowley thanked tlie committee, and said that there were a very large number of supporters who had helped, greatly towards getting the work completed. , It was decided that the -School Committee should award a trophy, for girls, in a life-saving competition, and the matter was left- in the hands of Airs. Walker and Aliss Morris. HEADMASTER’S REPORT.
The Headmaster (Air. F. J. Rowley) reported that during the month the average attendance had been 782.3, and the roll number 838, so that the average had been practically 93.4 per cent. The attendance of Standard 5 (girls) had been especially satisfactory, being 99.4 per cent. Mr. Rowley drew the attention of the committee to Arbor Dav, which falls on July 21st. It was resolved that the secretary should write, to the Headmaster commending Standard 5 for the very good attendance. The matter of, observing Arbor Day was referred to the Works Committee. £ -
MISCELLANEOUS.
The resignation of Aliss A. L. Pufiett, who has received a position at the Port Ahuriri School, was accepted (with rcerret. It was decided to nominate Air. Malcolm McLeod for the seat for the. Northern Ward on the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, rendered vacant by tl;o retirement of Mr. AlcLenion. Accounts amounting to £27 were passed for payment.
KAITI
The. monthly meeting of the Kaiti School Committee was held last night, the following members being present: Messrs A. J. Fyson (chairman), K. Humphreys, R. Rowan, J. C. E. Turner, E. F. Sullivan, and H. E- Hid (secretary). The Headmaster (Air.'Bull) reported that the average attendance for tlie past ‘month was 95 per cent of • the total number of scholars on the roll. He also- stated that the infant school chimneys were much in need of being, heightened, as in a southerly wind they smoked considerably.—The Committee decided to write to tho Hawke’s Bay Education Board in regard to the matter.
On tlie motion of Air. Fysdn, seconded by Mr... Humphreys, it was decided to nominate Mr. Malcolm AlcLeod, subject to his acceptance- of nomination, as the district representative on the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. A lengthy discussion took place in regard to celebrating Arbor Day (July 21 jby tree -planting in the .school grounds, and a committee consisting of 'Messrs Fyson.. Humphreys, and Turner was set up to make the necessary arrangements. Messrs 'Humphreys and Hill were elected as a visiting committee for tlie ensuing month. At the conclusion of tlie meeting a unanimous vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. G. Darton, whose father has just- lately died.
