THE CHILDRENS' CRECHE

OPENED BY THE MAYORESS. ; Tho new children’s creche, which has been erected in G'roy Street by the Cook County Women’s Guild, was opened by the Mayoress (Airs. W. D. Lysnar) yesterday afternoon. Though the day was cold, the wearlier was beautifully fine, and there were about 100 ladies and gentlemen present at the ceremony. Everyone was expected to bring something, and upon the verandah of the Homo was a liberal supply of small articles of furniture and vegetables, while substantial cheques and donations of money were handed in. The building is a plain but eminently substantial one, cosily furnished. There are cots for from ten to twelve children, a nice dining room, hall, and matron’s rooms. Airs. Stevenson has been engaged as matron, and a tread v there are seven weekly children boarders at the creche. At the front of the house is a nice little garden, and at the rear a large playground.. The verandah of the Home was collected for by Airs. Lysnar and Airs. Townley, and the bath-room by Airs. E. 1). Smitli, while the chimney was given free. ' The Alayoress, in a few well-chosen words, formally declared the creche open, and throe cheers were given for the Women’s. Guild. The Mayor, in a brief speech, congratulated the Women’s Guild on the success of their venture. He regretted there was a necessity in Gisborne for such a home, but as there was a necessity tho ladies had done a noble work to meet it. Already the Charitable Aid Board was supporting seven' children and contributing to the support of about 20 others, and thero would be seven children in the Home to-day, three of whom were non-contri-buting, while the parents of tho others paid the charges, which wore small. The Guild, and especially Mrs. Scott, were entitled to well-deserved praise for their good work. He had no doubt that the Home would prove self-sup-porting, and he wished it every sue-, cess. The Hon. James Carroll, ActingPremier, and Air. W. D. S. Alacdonald, ALP.,' had both telegraphed regretting their inability to be present, and wished tho creche every success. Airs. Alelksham and Airs,' Scott also spoke briefly on the objects of the crcche. Air. J. R. Ivirk, solicitor to the Guild, in a short speech "congratulated the members of the Women’s Guild on the success of their work, and read the following telegram from tho Hon. George Fowlds, Minister in Charge of Hospitals and Charitable Aid: "The Cook County Women’s Guild is exempted from the operation of sub-section 10 of section 41 of the Infants Protection Act upon condition that it is at all times open to 1 authorised inspectors of tho Education Department, and tliat the authorities will not be a party to the transfer of any child from its parents to another without the written consent of a person duly authorised under the Education Act. The Department’s agent in Gisborne is Mrs. Alelksham. I wlsn the Guild every success.” The Alinister also sent a telegram regretting liis inabi’ity to accept an invitation to attend the ceremony, and wishing the Guild success in its pliilan-. thropic work. Air. Wootton’s orchestra contributed a number of musical items, and afternoon tea was served.
