BOWLING.
GISBORNE CLUB. The weather yesterday afternoon was somewhat cold for bowling, but, nevertheless, the green of the Gisborne Bowling Club witnessed no fewer than four 'full rink games. Three of these were '’impromptu, but the other was, as it proved, the final in the District Shield competition. This took place between "Ponsford’s Kaiti rink and the Whatau•poko rink skipped by F. A. Martin. Great interest was taken in the game, and the more so because a victory for Ponsf.ord meant that Kaiti would secure the shield for this season._ The trophy, it may be noted, was gained by Kaiti last year. A win for Martin, on the other hand, would have meant that his 'rink -would have had to play the City and West End -representatives in order to decide the possession of the shield. That eventuality did not come off, for Ponsford’s rink proved the winners. The names of the players and the scores were: Kaiti: W. R. Clarkson, Mackintosh, Craig, J ; Ponsford (skip), 22; beat Wliataupoko: E. Williams, Hookey, Hennessy, F. A. Martin (skip), 15. — The winners had the advantage throughout, though both sides started evenly, ’Ponsford getting in three on the first head, and Martin doing the same on 'the second. On the Bth head Ponsford obtained a decided advantage by getting in no fewer than five, making Haiti’s score 12, to Whataupoko’s 5. In the three succeeding -heads Ponsford scored two to Martin’s one, but on the Bth the latter put up three, raising his total to 9, against his opponent’s 14. Scoring by small numbors on both sides followed, till the 16th head, when Whataupoko got in another three, bringing their total up to 13, against 17. In the succeeding heads Kaiti had the best of it. Whataupoko only scored a couple of singles, one of which was on >e 21st head, while the other side got in three on the 19th head, and two singles, so that their score stood 22 to 15 Both skips played exceedingly well, but Ponsford had the better support. Want of practice, it was suggested, militated against the chances of the other side. The results of the other games played were as follows: Hird, Wootton, G. K. Miller,. Bright (skip) 19, beat Kyme, Seymour, Pavitt, T. A. Crawford (skip) 15. Bullock, Lucas, W. Pettie, J. J. Martin (skip) 25, heat Oman, J. F. Pettie, Ambridge. Simson (skip) 13.
Redstone, Skillicorn, E. Lewis, Sarwyor (skip) 21, beat Boulton, Skeet, Ratcliffe, Eure (skip) 15., After the conclusion of play tho players .present assembled in the pavilion, AA'hore, on tho proposition of Mr. W. J. liennessy, the heglth of the winners of the District Shield Avas drunk with musical honors. Mr. Ponsford made a suitable acknowledgement. Mr. W. Pettie (President of tho Club) proposed tho health of the losing teams in the competition; Ho paid a graceful tribute to tho memory of the donor of the District Shield, tho late Mr. JA. Harding. Tho toast was drunk with duo honors, and suitably responded to by Messrs T. A. Crawford, Eure, Hennessy, Bright, and Ambridge.
