’ VESSELS DRIVEN ASHORE. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 5. ' The steamer Awaroa, which left Kaipara for Auckland, on Thursday, towing the brigantine Defiance, encountered a gale of hurricane force on Friday morning. She was helpless, rolling in the trough of the sea. Both vessels were being driven ashore. The hawser had to be slipped, leaving the Defiance to her own resources.
