INTENTIONS OF THE GOVERN--
MENT.
fPer Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 5. Increasing requirements of the railway business in town necessitate a substantial building programme, which will provide work in the Government shops and private engineering establishments if satisfactory tenders are received, for ten engines of the “A” class. Ten class “B” engines will be put in hand immediately at Addington, and ten side-tank engines of “W.F." class will be commenced at Hillside, and Petone. The Department is also going to build 600 “L” waggons at the different workshops. it fresh hands are needed, ■ preference will be given to men recently put off. 'CHRISTCHURCH, July 5. The Hon. J. A. Millar informed a deputation l of local members of Parliament that it was intended to build •- thirty engines in eighteen months in the Dominion. Ten “W.F.” engines would be built at Hillside, ten “8.5.” at Addington, and tenders would be called for ten. The work would be put in band as soon as material was available. The patterns were now in the Addington workshops. If tenders for ten “A.S.” were not satisfactory, the workshops would be given a chance. They intended to lay down ten ..engines in the workshops, so that the men would be able to bpecialise and become expert in bunding. As soon as a man. finished his part on one engine ho would do the same to the next and so on. This would show whether the workshops could do the work as cheaply as the private shops.
