THE DISTRICT’S EXPORTS.
ANNUAL RETURNS. -
The returns of the district s expo for the year ending Juno 30th, :g have been supplied by tlie local co or of Customs (Mr. J. Liowic). dho turns are notable in that t\ hey . that for the first time m the of the district the value of the ex ports, for the .twelve, months, to places outside the DonTinion, has rea - cd the largo total of over one mill ™ pounds. This must bo regarded as eminently satisfactory in view of the <- that during the period very low prices were ruling for the principal exports wool and mutton—and although last year’s output of wool exceeded that or the 1007-8' season by 3,067,4901b5., the cash value of it was £87,490 less, This increased output, although at lesser price, speaks volumes for the rap:< growth of tho pastoral industry of Poverty Bay. In addition, the export or frozen mutton lamb and beef increased by 164091 carcases, 81,453 carcases, and 20,070 cwt respectively. All the exports show a considerable increase, except m the case of hides, which show a falling off of 2569, the figures being, 1907-8, 8982 :• 1908-9, 6413. ' , , While the exports to the United Kingdom on the whole show a considerable increased cash value, those to New South Wales. Victoria, and Samoa show a falling off from the 1907-8 figures. This Is particularly noticeable as regards Samoa, where, although the trade has never assumed very large dimensions, the figures have fallen from £251 to £42. The total value of the exports for the year past shows an increase of £103,703, the figures being, 1907-8, £926,979; and 1908-9, £1,030.682. A new export appears in cheese, of which 27cwt was exported, to tho value of £7O.
