THE KAITARATAHI CRANE

REPLACED ON THE LINE

Yesterday afternoon the Borough Council’s locomotive crane was raised from the gravel pit at Kaitaratahi, into which it partially fell on Wednesday, and was replaced on the railway ■ iiiel The task was accomplished by means of an arrangement of blocks and tackles. Two lines were affixed to the machine, one being operated by means of a hand winch, and the other by manual power. By these means the crane was raised on Thursday afternoon to a horizontal position. Rails were then placed beneath it for the wheels to run upon, and yesterday, shortly after 2 p.m., it was hauled, up the incline and replaced on the line. It was found that the fears of serious damage had not been realised, no injury having been done beyond tlie breaking of the arm carrying the grab. Steam is to be got up in the boiler this morning. have been done yesterday afternoon had time been available', for there was nothing in the condition of the machine to hare prevented it. Those engaged in the work of lifting the crane are to he congratulated upon the manner in which they successfully accomplished the task.
