PROPOSED TATTERSALL’S CLUB
PROTEST BY CLERGYMEN. [Per Pres? Association.] WELLINGTON, July 9. A deputation of clergymen and laymen waited on the Acting-Premier tonight in reference to the proposed Tattersall’s Club in Wellington. They believed a charter would be asked for, apd they desired to enter a protest against it being, granted. It was also urged that if the club was established it" would defeat the _ intention of the Government’s legislation of 190 winch had been successful in closing bookmaking offices. „ . , In reply the lion. Jas. Carroll said that' if the charter was asked lor it would be refused. Ho could not see how the Government could interfere with the establishment of a Tattersall s Club, but if there was anything to show that the club was used for gambling purposes the representation 'of the deputation would receive every consideration.
