STEEPLECHASE MEETING —SECOND DAY.

There was again a large crowd at the Park racecourse yesterday, when the Gisborne Racing Club’s annual steeplechase meeting was concluded. The weather, though raw, proved fine until just before the last race, when a- light shower fell. The going was a little drier and faster than on Thursday, and better times were,, recorded for most of the events. The day again passed off entirely free from accidents or protests. Tho racing was good, the fields larger in number than on the first day, and everything, despite the unfavorable weather, passed off successfully. The secretary, Mr. H. E. Dodd, again saw to the comfort of all patrons, while afternoon tea and luncheon were provided by Mrs. Erskine. The Hon. Captain Tucker again carired out the duties of judge, Mr. O’Connor did excellent work as starter, and the other officials all faithfully attended to their duties. Nine bpokmqkers were licensed and did a brisk trade, while the sum nr £5503 was put through the totalisator, as against £5531 for the corresponding day last year, making £9590 for the two clays, as against £10,555 for the Club’s steeplechase meeting last rear. THE RACING.

The feature of the racing during the two days was the consistent form of the locally-trained horses, and the number of successes on the first day that were repeated yesterday. Mr. T. W. Hackett’s smart filly, Sublime, won the Maiden Hack race on Thursday, and repeated he r form by victories in the Maiden Hack Handicap and the Second Hack Flat Handicap. Out of a programme of 14 races for tho two days, Sublime won three events, Te Arai two, Baldos two, Mozart two, and Gladsmuir two, while Pearl Reef, the winner of the Flying Handicap on Thursday, ran second to Baldos in the Waikanae Handicap yesterday. The other winners were Haurangi and Wairaka. E. Porter rode Te /Arai and Gladsmuir on each occasion, making four winning mounts, E. Lowe won three times on Sublime, and Selby rode Mozart in both successes, aud Deeley scored on Baldos twice. The other successful jockeys, were J. Hall, W. Young, and J. Howard. Te Arai easily defeated Reservoir in the Hurdle Race, and again demonstrated that Mr. J. Clark’s cast-off has proved a good investment for Mr. C. Morse. Sublime showed her owner, Mr. T. W. Hackett, and the public that she can not only gallop, for during the two days she has won over distances of four, five, and six furlongs. Gladsmuir made hacks of Spate and Paisano in the Farewell Handicap, and showed that her victory on Thursdaywas no accident. There was a lot of, money for Continuance, and Mr. Holder's gelding ran a good race. Young moved his mount up to Gladsmuir twice, but Mr. Nasmith’s mare was galloping freely, and she won rather easily by two lengths. Sublime was the first out of the barrier, but Toa. 'lore took up the running to the turn. . In the straight, Sublime settled all opposition, Toa Tere being beaten out of a place. Munga Motio and Baldos then put in a run.' Baldos overtook Pearl Reef at the distance, and won by half-a-length, with Lloyds close up third. Time, lmin 35sec. After a little delay, the field of eleven was sent away to a good start. Gladsmuir, on the rails, made the pace, and at the rear of the course Continuance drew level. Porter moved Gladsmuir out on entering the straight and Mr. Nasmith’s mare came on and won, hard held, by a length and a-half. Spate was a length off third, Ballyheigh fourth, and Whakaweira last.
